2006-01-31 - 8:33 a.m. 5-Minute 2006 Oscar Screed OK, OK, by the time one is thirty-seven years old, one must certainly realize that the Academy Awards are indicative of nothing meaningful. Certainly not of art. Which is why I'm promising myself that I won't get incensed for more than five minutes [ok, you're right, it's already been at least fifteen at this point] about this. Anyway, what does an Asian actress need to do to get a break? Is Gong Li not among the Top 10 Screen Divas of All Time? OK, I just sort of liked Memoirs of a Geisha, but Li could incinerate a teahouse with just one look. Not to mention her "smoldering intensity" earlier this year in Wong Kar-Wai's 2046 (inexplicably ineligible for foreign language film, which is a-whole-nother useless screed in itself). Not wanting to bash, but did Frances McDormand need another nod for a role as a homespun salt-of-the-earth type? Is the whole Oscar exercise meaningless and ridiculous? Yes. Will I probably watch anyway (if I get an invite from someone who actually pays for cable television)? Um. Yes. Probably. Oh well. There are more important things to lament today, like the passing of Coretta Scott King or the latest, and local, post office massacre. Amen.
